Cranford’s Democratic voters chose Mayor Tom Hannen for re-election, former Assistant Secretary of State Tom Malinowski for Congress, the Union County Freeholder slate and (narrowly!) Senator Robert Menendez when they went to the polls on June 5.
Democrats out-voted Republicans more than 2:1 in this year’s primary election. Mayor Tom Hannen was the top vote-getter, with 1,387 votes.
In the competitive race for US House of Representatives, Malinowski took 1,054 votes, seriously outperforming his opponents Peter Jacob, who had 331 votes, and Goutem Jois, with 162 votes. This roughly followed across the 7th District, handing Malinowski the Democratic nomination. He now goes up against incumbent Rep. Leonard Lance.
Rahway blogger Lisa McCormick, whose campaign mainly consisted of frequent fundraising emails, gave Senator Robert Menendez a serious run in Cranford. He won here, but by an uncomfortably narrow 13-vote margin, 790 – 777. Senator Menendez won statewide.
Union County’s Democratic Freeholder candidates, Freeholder Alexander Mirabella, Councilwoman Andrea Staten and Kim Mouded, beat their challengers by a 4:1 margin in Cranford, and almost as strongly county-wide.
Now it’s off to the races for Cranford Democrats as we fight for our Democratic Majority in town and in Union County, and for a Democratic House and Senate!
